When a water body is suffering from eutrophication – containing an oversupply of nutrients – algal growth can be excessive. Dying algae fall to the bottom of the water body and settle on the sediment. Respiring bacteria break down the organic matter which can lead to oxygen depletion and the organic sludge is no longer degraded by aerobic bacteria but by suboxic or anaerobic bacteria which can cause foul odors. In addition, increased organic matter biomass leads to a reduced water depth and the formation of toxins. All of this can lead to fish kills and ultimately to silting up of a water body. SchlixX OxySpeed has a double effect to tackle this issue: an innovative combination of active components ensures that oxygen is released at the water body bed sediment which interrupts the activity of anaerobic odor-causing bacteria. Harmful fermentation gases such as hydrogen sulfide are oxidized. The phosphate that is released during the degradation of the sludge is bound in the insoluble mineral, apatite and is no longer available for the algae as a nutrient. The second active component releases additional oxygen over a period of two months and thus counteracts the formation of new fermentation gases. SchlixX OxySpeed provides a visual response to treatment and reduces odors immediately but also provides a long-term effect.
